Katz 21

This is the excerpt for your very first post.

Friday night I had my work Christmas party at Katz 21. It was a very fancy and upscale restaurant. We were brought back to the private party area. There were three rooms. Each room was a different size and they all had been named after different Greek islands. Greece is one of my favorite countries so I asked the server about it. He said that the owner is Greek.

We were given a drink menu and the prices were average, considering it was an upscale restaurant. The drinks were delicious and made strong. My favorite drink of the night was the Strawberry jalapeno margarita.

We started with two appetizers. The first was the spicy meat balls. I think they might have been the best meatballs that I’ve ever had in my life. It was served in a dish with sauce. A loaf of bread was placed on the side of the meatballs. I dipped the bread in the sauce and I wanted to die because it was so good.

The next appetizer to come out was the kat’s meow. Also delicious, but not as good as the meatballs. It came on a thin piece of bread like a bruschetta and had a piece of shrimp and some crab meat on it.

Our soup and salad came out next. I got the lobster bisque and the honey walnut salad. The lobster bisque was very good, however, there was only one piece of lobster in it and it was at the bottom of the soup.

The salad was unique. There was no dressing. It was made with iceberg lettuce, and served with walnuts and fruit with a honey glaze on top. I felt like it needed some oil to make the honey spread around more. I like a lot of dressing on my salad.

Finally, The main course came out. I ordered the 16 ounce ribeye and it came with garlic mashed potatoes and a side of broccoli. When I order steak, I always order it extra rare, or Pittsburgh blue. A lot of people don’t know what Pittsburgh blue is. It’s basically when the stake is only seared on both sides, like ahi tuna, and is still raw in the middle. I do not like my steak cooked. I asked for my steak to be cooked extra rare. When I got it, I felt like it came out more of a rare to medium rare. The inside was definitely cooked more than I wanted it to be. Because it was a work party I felt uncomfortable sending the food back and complaining. The ribeye was tender enough to cut with a butter knife. I was disappointed with this small portion size of the sides. I could barely see the mashed potatoes. You almost need a microscope to see them. And the broccoli, it was just one piece of broccoli. It tasted more like broccoli rabe than a giant piece of broccoli. I understand that fancy restaurant serve smaller portions, but I felt that that portion size was a little bit ridiculous and was more for presentation than actually eating.

The dessert that came out was cheesecake. It was good. It was just cheese cake. Honestly the cheesecake factory has better cheese cake.

Overall, I had a very good experience. I would go back, but I wouldn’t order steak there, just because I’m so picky with how I like mine cooked.

Katz 21 has happy hour daily from 4-7. I reached out to the manager and he sent me a PDF of the happy hour menu. On Mondays and Thursdays they also have a $5.00 Burger special. Below is their website.
